The original campus plans for the University of Florida at Gainesville were developed by the firm of Edwards & Walter. Edwards & Walter were contracted to design and layout the campus buildings in 1905. Additional plans were developed by the firm's successor, Edward and Sayward. From 1956 to 1958 Richard McGinnis and his wife Shirley lived in Flavet 3 which was married student housing for military veterans at the University of Florida. During the time they lived there two children were born, Douglas in 1955 and Cynthia in 1958 just before McGinnis was graduated.
